Back in 2019, I was on stage at my doctoral commencement, surrounded by my succesful colleagues, staring out at thousands of people who were there to celebrate our accomplishment.
It was the culmination of an educational journey consisting of 12 years, thousands of hours of clinicals, a 60+ page project defense, and 4 completed degrees.
I should have been ecstatic, right?
But the thought replaying over and over in my head was, "Now what?"
I had achieved everything the world told me would bring fulfillment, but I felt spiritually restless and discontent.
It wasn't until the pandemic hit just a few months later that it became clear- I'd climbed the wrong ladder, and ended up on the wrong roof.
Let me be clear- becoming a doctorally prepared nurse wasn't a "mistake."
In fact, it was a pivotal part of my journey.
See, some of us need to climb a few ladders on our own, while God patiently watches and waits for us to realize we're not meant to do this in our own strength.
4 years later, after I climbed another misaligned ladder (our Trauma Institute), I finally hit my knees and asked Jesus for help.
I told Him I was willing to start from scratch WITH Him, if He was willing to walk with a very stubborn woman who only knew how to do it "her way."
And you know what Jesus did?
He MET me in that moment... and then gently and slowly showed me overtime the "right" ladder to climb in accordance with His will.
I won't lie- starting from scratch in obedience with God's will can be a tough, grueling, and often uncertain path...
AND climbing with Jesus next to you makes all the difference.
